(02/2007) 3. From the President3.1 Seminar: Contrasts in Master Planning approaches – Have we got it wrong? We may have all come across (or
are yet to) Master Planning for communities. Mr Bruce Harper from Investa
presented two interesting case studies, comparing the challenges,
opportunities and potential outcomes of Mawson Lakes (SA) and the Palmview
(Qld) Structure Plan at our recent seminar held at the Sunshine Coast
University on Tuesday evening, 31st May. After an enjoyable seminar and
great turnout, many were left to think and discuss the challenges and
opportunities Master Planning presents. Some interesting points included: ·
‘Less is more’ in planning codes and plans ·
‘Collaborative relationships are the key’ particularly
between private industry, Council and State Government ·
‘Innovation is evolutionary, not revolutionary’
–bringing new ideas to the community rather than ‘dragging
communities along’. Thank you Bruce for an enjoyable
presentation which got us all thinking! 3.2 Sunshine Coast Branch Welcome Function at USCThe Sunshine Coast Branch held its
annual welcome function, kindly sponsored by Goodwin Midson, at the
University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday evening, 23rd March. The
function proved a rousing success with a total of 48 people, consisting of
students, lecturers, and planning professionals in attendance. Entertaining and informative
presentations were provided by Paul Gleeson (Sunshine Coast Council
Coordinator Master Planned Communities) and Mark Farrell (RPS Group, Sunshine
Coast General Manager) who spoke about the highlights and challenges of their
careers. At the close of a successful
evening, student attendees were provided with a carry bag of material donated
by PIA and Goodwin Midson highlighting the many possibilities available to
those within the planning industry. Sian
Davis, President |

4. Editor’s privilege – What is Plain English?First let’s say what plain
English isn’t and destroy some of the myths about it. ·
It’s not ‘cat sat on the mat’ or ‘Peter and
Jane’ writing. Almost anything - from leaflets and letters to legal
documents - can be written in plain English without being patronising or
over-simple. ·
It doesn’t mean reducing the length or changing the meaning of
your message. ·
It’s not about banning new words, killing off long words or
promoting completely perfect grammar. Nor is it about letting grammar slip. ·
It is not an amateur’s method of communication. Most
forward-looking senior managers always write in plain English. ·
And finally, it is not as easy as we would like to think. Sadly, people have learned to
accept an official style of writing that is inefficient and often unfriendly. But in the last few years, the
movement of plain English has started to put things right. The advantages of plain English are: ·
it is faster to write ·
it is faster to read ·
you get your message across more often, more easily and in a
friendlier way. If you spend more than an hour of
writing a day, it’s vital that you get it right. So what is plain English? It is a
message, written with the reader in mind and with the right tone of voice,
that is clear and concise. Below is a list of words to avoid
when writing for the public or clients. Try to use the alternatives suggested
